Tom Hanks-5-1024x767Hanks his next role - astronaut and commander Jim Lovell, in the docudrama Apollo 13 (1995) - was his first time reuniting with Ron Howard. Critics generally applauded the film and the performance of the entire ensemble, including actors Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, and Kathleen Quinlan. The film also earned nine Academy Award nominations, winning two. Hanks then acted as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animation film Toy Story (1995). The following year, Hanks made his directorial debut with the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) which chronicles the demise and growth of a 60s-era music group. He also took on the role as a music producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel called it "charming" and the majority of reviewers agree that Hanks performance earned him a spot among the top romantic-comedy stars his generation.
