Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada and raised in the US. She has worked as a media critic since 1995. She created Feminist Frequency which is a website which features video and posts discussing the depictions of females in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger and award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. Feminist Frequency is a site dedicated to education, which examines women's role in the narratives of pop culture, is her brainchild. The site also has the executive director. In her efforts to dispel the myths of women that have been portrayed in pop culture, she is a vocal advocate for issues relating to harassment targeted at women and other marginalized classes of individuals in the internet space. Sarkeesian is a graduate in the fields of social thought and political science from York University. She is an extremely well-respected and respected public presenter. Sarkeesian delivered speeches to the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Interested in issues concerning gender identities and feminisms from the age of 7, she started her website Feminist Frequency in 2009 while still a student at the University. A woman with ambitions to launch a web-series that would examine the representation of gender in video games, she was targeted by an internet-based campaign. However the attack could not deter her instead it only strengthened her resolve to be a feminist media critic. To honor the numerous achievements she's made for feminist movements, she has been the recipient of numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. The nonprofit explores the portrayals of women in contemporary pop culture.
